An Interview with Dr. Dawson T. Li on Low Vision.

Dr. Dawson T. Li is an Optometrist and has answered some common questions that Bizymoms visitors have about Low Vision.

Q.  What is Low Vision?

A.  Low vision involves special prescriptions and visual devices for those with extreme visual loss, most notably due to ocular disease.  However, there are also congenital conditions that would cause blindness as well.  Such devices would be special magnifiers, glasses, and CCTV’s.  A hope would be with the popularity of handheld devices like the IPad and large Kindle; this may be of huge help for those with visual disabilities.

Q.  What causes Low Vision?

A.  The most common cause nowadays is Age-related Macular Degeneration amongst our older patient population. However, Glaucoma, and complications related to diabetes and high blood pressure could also create significant visual problems as well.  There are also the less common congenital visual disabilities such as Nystagmus and Retinitis Pigmentosa as well.

Q.  How do I know if I need bifocals?

A.  The most common problem for our patients is the dreaded "Over 40" disease.  Mother Nature calls for our eyes to change after turning 40. Our ability to read and focus on small up close print weakens and usually requires visual help in the form of a bifocal or reading glass.  At our office, our preference has always been to use Progressive Lenses, otherwise known as blended bifocals.

Q.  How can I stop glare at night or at a computer?

A.  It all starts with the proper prescription.  Once examined, the most important thing we advise for our patients is our Anti-Glare lenses.  These are specially coated lenses that decrease all the annoying glare from headlights, streetlights, computer glare, and office fluorescent light glare.

Q.  How can we contact Dr. Li if we have further questions?
