An Interview with Dr. Robert T. Wootton on Dentures.

Dr. Robert T. Wootton is a Dentist who has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Dentures.

Q.    What are dentures?

A.    Dentures are simply false teeth or as some people refer to as plates constructed of acrylic with plastic or porcelain teeth that replace the missing natural teeth.

Q.    Why should I use a denture adhesive?

A.    Some people need to use a denture adhesive to make their dentures stay in their mouth more securely.

Q.    What types of cosmetic dentures are possible?

A.    Cosmetic dentures may be dentures that are made with a certain type of implants that are used for better retention so that the dentures snap in and out of the mouth and can be customized to appear more natural than a simple denture.

Q.    How long do cosmetic dentures take to make?

A.    Cosmetic dentures may take three or four weeks to make after the implants are in place and healed.

Q.    What are the alternatives to cosmetic dentures?

A.    The best alternative to cosmetic dentures would be implants with custom porcelain crowns and bridges that are cemented in place and function as near to natural teeth as is possible.

Q.    Are dentures uncomfortable or painful to wear?

A.    Dentures can be uncomfortable to wear if they are old, ill fitting or not properly made.

Q.    What’s the difference between conventional dentures and immediate dentures?

A.    Immediate dentures are dentures that are constructed while the patient still has some natural teeth remaining.  When the immediate denture comes back from the lab the patient’s remaining teeth are removed and the denture is seated with a soft liner.  As the mouth heals the denture is continuously relined with soft liner until healing is complete. At this time the denture is relined with permanent material and the denture is complete.
