An Interview with Dr. Ricardo DaSilva on Porcelain Veneers

Dr. Ricardo DaSilva is a dentist, and has answered some common questions that Bizymoms visitors have about Porcelain Veneers.

Q.    What are porcelain veneers?

A.    Porcelain veneers are thin porcelain layers placed on the surfaces of the teeth to improve their size, shape, color, or to repair and protect damaged teeth.

Q.    How long to dental veneers last?

A.    Porcelain veneers can be a durable restorative option if maintained adequately. A good candidate will enjoy the benefits of the treatment for many years. Porcelain veneers may last for 10, 20 years or longer, but one should not think of them as being permanent.

Q.    Do dental veneers require special care?

A.    In general, porcelain veneers are cared for in very similar ways to natural teeth. Porcelain veneers will not suffer decay, but the uncovered part of the tooth where it is attached to is still at risk. Avoiding snacks or drinks rich in sugar or starch in between meals greatly reduces the risk of tooth decay. Also, the resin used to bond the restoration may stain during its lifetime and this process can be accelerated by some kinds of foods and beverages. Regular home care like flossing and brushing is paramount, along with regular professional maintenance to keep porcelain veneers functioning well, and looking their best. Abrasive toothpaste or other substances can scratch the porcelain and give it a dull appearance over time. It is therefore recommended that a non-abrasive toothpaste with a soft toothbrush be used. Veneers can fracture or chip  just like your natural teeth. Hard impacts should be avoided by not  biting into very hard objects (forks, pins, nails,). If you practice contact sports, always wear a protective mouth guard.

Q.    Are there alternatives to dental veneers?

A.    Whitening procedures can be used if tooth discoloration is the main concern.
Resin facing can also be done with very good results, but it tends to stain more than porcelain. Full coverage porcelain crowns can also produce excellent cosmetic results in the cases where tooth structure is damaged or compromised. If there are missing teeth, fixed bridges and dental implants can restore the natural appearance of your smile.

Q.    Do veneers look natural?

A.    Veneers usually cannot be distinguished from natural teeth.

Q.    Does the veneer protect one’s tooth from decay?

A.    Only the covered surfaces are protected from decay. Exposed tooth structure is still at risk, especially where the veneer meets the tooth. Regular care and caries prevention routines should always be maintained.

Q.    What does a veneer cost?

A.    According to the National Dental Advisory Service 2010 porcelain veneers range from $952.00 to $1390.00, but fees may vary.

Q.    How can we contact Dr. Ricardo if we have further questions?
