Veneers history : How Did Veneers First Come About? Auburn
Veneers history; how did veneers first come about?
Veneers are certainly a part of a revolutionary break-through as far as dentistry is concerned. The greatest advantage to veneers is the fact that they provide effective cosmetic solutions that are also long lasting. Veneers are porcelain laminates or thin layers of porcelain that are made to fit over the surface of teeth. These “layers” of porcelain are “fixed” on to the teeth in a manner that is very similar to the way that false fingernails may be fit on to the surface of nails. Today, veneers are mostly employed as a means of improving the overall appearance of teeth. However, veneers are also often used in the more “corrective” areas of dentistry. Porcelain veneers are often used as fillings, to fix “gaps” and where braces are deemed unsuitable.
Veneers were invented by a dentist called Charles Pinkus. However, the veneers that Pinkus used soon fell off, as they were held by a dental adhesive that was not strong enough to hold porcelain veneers firmly in place. It was in 1982 that Simonsen and Calamia conducted research on veneers and came up with several discoveries that helped firmly establish more reliable methods of veneering. Simonsen and Calamia were fortunate enough to discover that porcelain could be etched with hydrofluoric acid. Bond strengths could then be achieved between composite resins and porcelain. This means that porcelain venners are now a lot more “reliable” because these bond strengths will be able to able to hold such veneers on to a tooth – strongly and permanently. With time, the process of veneering developed to include improved cements and bonding agents. These bonding agents ensure that veneers last as long as three decades!
Today this dental revolution has developed to become a lucrative and highly successful industry of sorts. Despite the costs, dental veneering is a highly coveted dental procedure because of the long-term solutions that it offers. Dentists today can charge up to $1000 for veneering on a single tooth; although costs may vary according to the expertise and location of the dentist.
