Q. What is liposuction?
A. Liposuction is the removal of excess fat through small incisions with specially designed cannulae connected to suction machines.
Q. Who is a good candidate for liposuction?
A. Good candidates are those who are not grossly overweight, have localized excess areas of fat and skin which is not excessive and of normal elasticity.
Q. What are the risks associated with liposuction surgery?
A. In the right hands, on the right patient, and in the right setting, liposuction is extremely safe. Risks, however, do include a small risk of life-threatening complications, especially if excessive liposuction is performed. Other risks include blood loss, infection, areas of over suction, and areas of under suction.
Q. What technique will the surgeon use to perform the liposuction?
A. There are several different techniques including tumescent liposuction, ultrasonic-assisted liposuction, laser-assisted liposuction, and power-assisted liposuction. Each has its own advantages and drawbacks and each has areas in which it will perform best.
Q. How long is the recovery period?
A. In terms of returning to work and resuming most activities of daily living, anywhere from 5-7 days depending on the extent of the liposuction. In terms of full recovery, returning to exercise and unrestricted activity, at least three weeks, and in terms of realizing the final result, it may take as long as three months.
Q. Are the results of liposuction permanent?
A. Yes, the results of liposuction are permanent, but should the patient gain weight it will affect the result.
Q. How much does liposuction surgery cost?
A. Cost of liposuction surgery depends on the size of the area and number of areas that are operated on. It could start at around $3,000-$5,000 and go as high as $10,000-$15,000. |
