Q. What is breast reduction surgery? And what are the benefits of breast reduction surgery?
A. Breast reduction surgery provides relief from physical discomforts, enhancing appearance and give greater confidence for women with large, heavy breasts. Large breasts often contribute to back, neck and shoulder pain with groove marks on the shoulders and rash under the breasts. In some cases, women with large breasts find exercise uncomfortable. Very heavy breasts can even cause skeletal problems and breathing difficulties. Breast reduction surgery can alleviate these problems. Appearance and self-confidence are generally improved as well. This procedure is often covered by medical insurance.
Q. Who is a good candidate for a breast reduction?
A. Anyone who has heavy breasts that experience pain in the neck and back is a good candidate. Usually conservative therapy such as physical therapy fail to relieve the pain in the neck, back and shoulder and breast reduction will be the treatment of the choice.
Q. What are the risks involved of breast reduction surgery?
A. Like many surgeries, breast reduction has complications. The most long term obvious complication is the scar that has to be placed on the breasts to reduce the size and these scars are permanent. Although, with time, scars fade away and improve. The other complications are loss of sensation, inability to lactate post surgery, infection, bleeding, pain, etc.
Q. What should one expect after breast reduction surgery?
A. One should expect not only relief of the pain in the back, neck and shoulders area but also nice smaller size breasts that is proportional to her body that are lifted at the same time.
Q. How much does a breast reduction cost?
A. Most insurance companies pay for breasts reduction, but if someone does not have insurance and want to have this procedure, it cost around $7000.00 and higher depending on the time in surgery (how large breasts are indicate the time in surgery) which includes fees for surgeon, the operating room, anesthesiologist and post op follow ups. This is an outpatient surgery, so there is no over night stay required.

A. Depending on the size of the breasts, scars usually are extensive around the areola, with 5 cm vertical scar and in the mammary folds. It looks like a "Anchor." For photos, refer to my website, www.ccrsatlanta.com
