What is a horoscope
A horoscope means a “celestial map” of sorts. This chart or diagram represents the position of the celestial bodies and other astrological aspects at the time of a person's birth. The word horoscope means a “look at the hours” and is derived from the Greek words of the same meaning. In English the horoscope is also known as an astrological chart. The horoscope is used in a branch of astrology called Horoscopic Astrology. Horoscopes are usually “drawn-up” by astrologers who know what every aspect of a horoscope means' or is supposed to mean. Horoscopic Astrology is said to have been first practiced in the Mediterranean region and in Hellenistic Egypt.

A horoscope reading means an astrologer's interpretation of a person's horoscope. The horoscope supposedly allows the astrologer to arrive at a conclusion regarding a person's character or temperament. It is also said to allow an astrologer to interpret and predict the future of an individual.

There are several branches of horoscopic astrology' these are as follows;

Natal Astrology

Natal astrology is the interpretation of a person's personality in relation to his horoscope. Natal astrology is probably the most widely practiced branch of horoscopic astrology. It is practiced in both Western and Eastern parts of the word.

Mundane Astrology

Mundane Astrology is the interpretation of world events based on a horoscope. According to most astrologers' Mundane Astrology is believed to be the most ancient form of astrology known to mankind.

Electional Astrology

Electional Astrology is a branch of Astrology that deals with determining the “auspicious time.” According to Astrological beliefs' the auspicious time is considered the best time for the execution of certain activities. For instance' those who believe in Astrology and all aspects of astrology rely on an astrologer's recommendation of an auspicious time before starting a business' or getting married.

Horary Astrology

A basic definition for Horary Astrology would be to say that it is the branch of Astrology that allows an Astrologer to answer a question by drawing up a horoscope. The horoscope is drawn-up in relation to the time and place that the question was asked.

Apart from the stars and planets' an individual's horoscope also contains several factors that are charted based on calculations. These calculations are made in order to arrive at a conclusion regarding several factors such as;

The Zodiac Signs

The Fixed Stars

The Lots

Lunar Nodes

House Cusps

Ascendant

Midheaven

All these factors are considered necessary for an individual's horoscope reading. The astrologer then considers all these aspects of a horoscope and comes to a conclusion regarding what each aspect in an individual's horoscope means' and how it affects his personality and future events.

Even in the technologically and scientifically advanced world of today' it is interesting to note that astrology remains a common practice – particularly in the Eastern part of the world.
