Western Astrology |
|
The tradition of astrology popular and prevalent in western countries (also in Arabia) is referred to as the Western Astrology. It is based upon a system, which uses the pathway of the sun through the space, as seen from the earth. Western astrology originated in Mesopotamia during the 2nd millennium BC, from where it slowly spread to other parts of the world.
Mesopotamia, now Iraq, included the Akkadians, the Sumerians, the Babylonians and the Assyrians. It was the Babylonians (Chaldean Astrology) who began to interpret the celestial cycles, rather than just random events, which developed into the proper astrology. Further developments occurred with its spread to Egypt, and this was followed by its entry into the Greek or Hellenistic culture.
Ptolemy, an ancient astronomer and astrologer, laid the foundations of Western astrological tradition in his work, Tetrabiblos. According to western astrology, a horoscope (natal chart) is made on the basis of the birth time of an individual. The Sun is the most important consideration in modern western astrology. The sun sign represents the sign of the zodiac that the sun passed through at the time of birth of an individual.
During the Dark Ages, knowledge of astrology suffered a major setback in Europe. However, western astrology was revived and expanded by Persian and Arabian scholars, who then re-imported this knowledge to Europe in the Middle Ages. Things caught up so fast, that astrologers were consulted before taking any important military or political decisions in medieval Europe. Today, it is used mostly by individuals to know about themselves, their characteristics, skills, and most importantly their future. Some astrologers use the Sun sign astrology of tropical zodiac, which considers only the location of the sun, whereas some others use the Sidereal zodiac, which is based on the actual star positions.
Zodiac signs, popularly known as the sun signs, are determined by the birth date of an individual. The Zodiac is made up of 12 different sun signs, which are believed to represent 12 basic personality types or modes of expression. The twelve signs are divided into four elements namely, fire, water, earth and air, and is also divided into three qualities, which are cardinal, mutable and fixed. The 12 zodiac signs are as follows:
