Vedic Astrology

Indian astrology is most commonly referred to as Vedic astrology, and this is not because it is there in the Vedas. However, it is one of the Vedangas, a branch of the Vedas dating back to the Vedic period (1200BC to 2500BC). It is called Vedic astrology because many Poojas laid down in the Indian astrology are as per the Vedic system.

The Vedangas is categorized into 8 groups, namely Siksha (Phonetics), Vyakarana (Grammar), Kalpa (Ritual), Chhandas (Metrics), Nirukta (Etymology) and Jyothishya (Astrology and Astronomy), and these are mentioned in the Upanishads (one of a set of Vedic philosophical treatises).

Astrology in general has a dual purpose. It is used as a means to find the right place and time to start various auspicious activities, so that the outcomes will be ultra-favorable, and is also used as a lead to study the destinies of people.

Vedic astrology is based on the theory of Karma. The good and bad things done in the previous life/lives determine one’s fate in the present life, and the actions of the present (and possibly past) lives will determine one’s future karma. However, Vedic astrology does not preach total dependence on Karma. It highlights the good and bad things that one will face in the future, and says that acting accordingly and wisely would help an individual capitalize on his/her strengths, reduce his/her weaknesses, make use of opportunities and how to face and counter threats, thus enabling one to determine their own fate.

Vedic astrology has a four-dimensional approach. To start with, it has the divisional chart system, called the Varga system. 16 divisional charts are prepared (by dividing the degrees of the planets) based on the planetary degrees at the time of birth. These divisional charts are then studied to determine the strengths and weakness of planets and houses, and also to study various miens of one’s life.

Second is the Dasa system. The ruling periods of various planets, known as Dasas are calculated based on one’s moon’s degrees at birth. Dasas keep changing during one’s life. It is not just one planets dasa but Maha dasa (main period) of a planet, Antardasa (sub period) of another planet and so on till it arrives at a fifth level dasa to study each day.

Third is the transit of planets, known as Gochara. Planets transiting various houses produce multifarious results. But a planet transits a sign for quite some time. In addition to that, Vedic astrology shows the good and bad periods even during its transit in one sign. We have the Asthakavarga and Prastharasthakavarga system, which separates a planets transit in a sign into eight parts and explains which part is good and which part is bad.

Finally, there is the Prasna Kundali system, or chart cast based on the time of the query. This is studied as an add-on chart to give predictions.

Modern scientists do not believe in and accept astrology, because they think that stars and planets have minimal effect on humans and believing in their movements would seem absurd in such a sophisticated environment. But it is a fact that mental patients behave frenziedly and health conditions of those suffering from asthma worsen, which proves that these heavenly objects have some kind of influence on mankind. It is hard to understand, but it is true, which is why the ancestors of India developed this philosophy/ science to help people out.
