Astrology and Astronomy |
|
Astrology and astronomy are two very interesting topics most people love talking about, but end up mixing and confusing. Astrology and astronomy have been related for centuries, meant more or less the same thing (making it hard to discern) until only the past few hundred years. Before moving onto the differences between astronomy and astrology, it is vital to understand what they mean.
Astrology is the study of the movements and relative positions of the moon, sun, planets and stars, and the skill of describing the expected effect that these are believed to have on the lives, character and behavior of humans. Astronomy in contrast, is the scientific study of the universe as a whole and of objects which exist naturally in space, such as the sun, the moon, planets and stars.
Some people believe that astrology came before astronomy, but some others believe otherwise. Astrology was invented or found thousands of years ago, even before the planets in the universe were found and named. However, there is enough evidence to prove that astronomy came before astrology. For example, it is apparent that the Babylonians studied the stars and their motions for millennia before the development of an astrological interpretation system.
Astronomy is a science, which is based on careful examination and calculation. I.e. it is based on laws of both physics and math. It helps individuals gain increased knowledge of the universe and is responsible for the discovery of planets, stars, asteroids, galaxies, etc. However, astrology is not based on collected data and carefully controlled observations thus making it obvious that it’s less of a science.
Astronomy includes functions like predictions and calculations of sunrise and sunset times, celestial body movements, changes in space, eclipse dates and locations, comet or asteroid visibility, etc., whereas astrology includes applications such as horoscopes, auspicious times, etc. This proves that these two subjects are different from each other having separate goals and methods.
Some people believe that astronomy is better because they will be able to gain new knowledge about space and celestial bodies, thus widening their knowledge and initiating them to use their brains, and think and find something new and related. However, astrology is believed to make people weak. By placing one’s future in the fortuitous arrangement of planets and stars, you fail to make judgments based on your own best self interest, you keep away from taking responsibility for your actions, and you give up the power to control your own destiny. In other words, you let the stars rule and control your life, which is highly uncivilized.
Even though astrology is critiqued, those people in highly developed countries too believe in it. You would be surprised to see even the huge space craft companies and astronauts seek astrologer-advise to obtain an auspicious time (before leaving) so as to ensure a safe and successful journey to space. |
