Feng Shui, pronounced in English as “fung shway”, often identified as a form of geomancy, is an ancient Chinese practice of placement, display and arrangement of available space to ensure congruity and achieve harmony with the environment. Feng Shui in earlier times was known as “Kan-Yu”, which means ‘The Law of Heaven and Earth’, but it literally as “wind water”. it is also referred to as “Vastu Shastra” and “Vastu Vidya”. The basic components of Feng Shui are space, weather, astrology and pseudo-geomagnetism.
Feng Shui is a concept that emphasizes and believes that living with nature rather than living against it benefits both humans and the environment. It is also related to the concept that our lives are extremely affected by our physical and emotional surroundings. The concept or idea of feng shui is simple. That is, if we are surrounded by good things, we will benefit but if we are surrounded by bad things, we will be negatively affected. For e.g. if we surround ourselves with signs of sorrow, death, hate and indifference toward life and environment, with noise and evil, we will corrupt ourselves in the process. However, if we surround ourselves with serenity, beauty, compassion, humanity, music and with other forms of happiness and harmony, it would elevate our lives as well as the environment in which we live.
There are experts who know about feng shui and these so-called masters of feng shui (who understands the 5 elements (water, rain, sun, wind and fog) and the 2 energies such as chi and sha (hard energy, opposite of chi), are able to discover metaphysical energies and give advice for their best use. These experts use their metaphysical sensors to detect the flow of both good and bad energy in buildings, internal furniture arrangements, and gardens. They suggest as to which way the doors should face, which direction the head of the bed should face, how the layout of the rooms should be, what plants should and should not be in your garden, etc. These experts are believed to suggest the best setting based on their feel for the flow of chi, electromagnetic fields, or simply based on the levels of energy pertaining to the client’s requirements.
Feng shui or “Vastu Shastra” has become a growing phenomenon and has therefore become a fundamental feature of interior decorating in the Western world. Feng shui experts hire themselves out for huge sums and among those who have hired them are Prince Charles of Wales and Donald Trump. The most famous feng shui related products are crystals, mirrored balls, wind chimes, and table fountains, and these are believed to invigorate one’s health and wealth.
Critics consider that Feng Shui is a pseudoscience and believes that it is a means of deceiving people and reaching into their pockets.
