An Interview with Dr. John I. White on Porcelain Veneers
Dr. John I. White is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Porcelain Veneers.
Q. What are porcelain veneers?
A. Veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are placed on the tooth and bonded in place, or veneered to the tooth.
Porcelain veneers can reverse years of stains caused by foods, caffeine and tobacco use and can be used to correct discolored, worn down, cracked and chipped teeth. Veneers can also be used to close unsightly gaps between teeth. An impression of the tooth is made and a veneer fabricated by a lab technician.
The process involves buffing the tooth, removing an extremely thin layer of the tooth to allow for the thickness of the veneer. An impression of the tooth is made, and final bonding of the veneer to the tooth with special cement completes the procedure.
Q. How long do dental veneers last?
A. Stronger types of veneers made of porcelain typically last longer because they are bonded to the tooth.
Q. Do dental veneers require special care?
A. Veneers can be treated like natural teeth. Normal brushing, flossing, and regular care can help make your veneers long lasting. Of course, things that can create problems for natural teeth can also create problems for veneers too, such as chewing ice, biting finger nails or problems in your bite that can cause excessive wear.
Q. Are there alternatives to dental veneers?
A. There are no alternatives to veneers that rival their esthetic ability and durability.
Q. Do veneers look natural?
A. Well made porcelain veneers can rival the look of beautiful natural teeth. In fact, most people cannot detect that porcelain veneers aren’t your natural teeth.
Q. Does the veneer protect one’s tooth from decay?
A. Porcelain surfaces cannot, of course, decay in the same way that natural tooth structure does. However, good regular care must be used to ensure that the edges where the porcelain is bonded to the tooth do not suffer from decay.
Q. How much does veneer cost?
A. The cost of porcelain veneers varies, depending on how many teeth require correction. The costs also depend on other factors including the material used, and any procedures that may be required to correct bite problems so that the veneers will be long lasting.
