An Interview with Dr. Jesse Jenkins on Root Canal

Dr. Jesse Jenkins is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Root Canal.

Q. What is root canal treatment?

A. When a tooth becomes infected due to decay or a fracture, a root canal treatment is necessary to preserve the remainder of the tooth without having to take it out.

Q. What does treatment involve?

A. This treatment involves removing the unhealthy or infected circulatory and nervous system of the tooth root. Once cleaned and shaped, the inside of the tooth is filled with a soft rubber material that seals the inside of the root and blocks infectious bacteria from entering the tooth again.

Q. What are the signs of needing endodontic treatment?

A. If the tooth is infected it can cause an abscess and can be extremely dangerous to the health of the patient.  An untreated abscess will eventually eat through the bone into the soft tissue causing a boil and swelling of the face and cheeks.  If the infection drains internally, however, it can lead to severe complications requiring immediate hospitalization.  This includes but is not limited to brain abscess, septicaemia, meningitis, or even Ludwig's Angina(closure of the airway).

Q. Are pain pills and antibiotics an acceptable substitute for root canal?

A. Antibiotics and pain medication are usually prescribed in conjunction with root canal therapy, but should never under any circumstance be taken as an alternative.

Q. Are there alternative treatments for root canal?

A. The only alternative to root canal therapy is tooth extraction.

Q. How much will the procedure cost?

A. The usual fee for a root canal treatment can range from $685 to $935 depending on the location of the tooth, your insurance plan, and the office you are visiting.

Q. Will the tooth need any special care or additional treatment?

A. It is important to remember that once a root canal treatment has been performed, the tooth has lost its circulatory supply and will become very dry and brittle.  This will lead to the tooth fracturing under pressure and is avoided by crowning the tooth with a metal or porcelain "cap" after the root canal therapy is completed.
