An Interview with Dr. Michelle A. Rivera on Laser Hair Removal.

Dr. Michelle A. Rivera is a board certified Dermatologist by the American Board of Dermatology. Here the Doctor has answered some common questions that Bizymoms visitors have about Laser Hair Removal.

Q.  Please explain the Possible Risks and Side Effects of Laser Hair Removal

A.  Possible side effects of laser: Burns, scars, infections and treatment failures because of poor patient selection/ improper technique. A great laser candidate would be someone with dark hair on white skin. Location is also a factor. Hair on the lip and chin take more treatments to clear than in the armpit/bikini/legs. A poor laser candidate would be someone with blonde or white hair or darkly pigmented skin. That is because the way the laser works. It is a wavelength of light that has to get picked up by the melanin pigment of the skin to cause a heat reaction which then destroys the hair bulb. Blonde/white hair has no pigment, so no heat reaction, hence no destruction of the hair bulb. Darkly pigmented skin will get burned because of the amount of melanin in the skin.

Q.  Does excessive hair growth affect the laser treatment? What are the possible causes for such excessive hair growth?

A.  Excessive hair growth can be genetic, hormonal or "in the eyes of the beholder". It is important to get evaluated to see if there are any underlying metabolic issues such as polycystic ovary disease, adrenal hyperplasia, hyperthyroidism, anorexia.

Q.  What factors should be considered when choosing a Laser Hair Removal Clinic?

A.  In Choosing a Laser Hair Removal Clinic: Don’t be pennywise and pound foolish. You need to check the kind of laser as well as the person who is treating you.

Q.  How could you define the Hair Growth Cycle? How Does Hair Growth cycle work?

A.  The laser takes away 20% of the hair with each treatment.

Q.  How can we contact Dr. Rivera if we have further questions?
