An Interview with Dr. James Chappell on Breast Lifting

Dr. James Chappell is a plastic surgeon and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Breast Lifting.

Q. What is Breast Lifting?

A. Mastopexy, or breast lift, is done to restore (or give) a more "youthful" appearance to breasts ravaged by breast feeding and/or time.  It involves rearranging the nipple/areola relative to the rest of the breast.

Q. How is breast lift surgery done?

A. Evaluate patient to make sure they are a good candidate.  Pre-op lab work and evaluation.  Make sure patient understands where scars will be.  Mark the patient.  General anesthesia.   Rearrange breasts.  Assure they look even.  Suture them up.  Put patient in a surgical bra.  Wake them up.  Discharge home in care of a loving adult friend or partner or spouse.  Have them follow up within a week or so.

Q. What is the recovery period like?

A. Not bad.  Usually some narcotic use, no running/bouncing for 6 weeks, but light activity on an increasing scale starting day 1.

Q. Who is an ideal candidate for breast lift surgery?

A. Ptotic or "saggy" breasts that may or may not also need implants. And patient must be accepting of surgical risks.

Q. Are there risks and complications to a breast lift surgery?

A. Definitely.  Would cover those in consultation.  This is real surgery, so real risks (like death and major healing problems) are possible.  Good to discuss pre-operatively.

Q. How long do the results last?

A. Often last many years, but we cannot stop the clock or reverse gravity.

Q. How much does breast lift surgery cost?

A. $5000-8000 (all inclusive) is a good ESTIMATED range.
