An Interview with Dr. Richard Beil on Breast Lifting.

Dr. Richard Beil is a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Here the Doctor has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Breast Lifting.

Q. What is Breast Lifting?

A. A breast lift is formally known as a mastopexy.  It is performed on women who experience a loss of breast volume which results in breast skin excess and sagging or droopiness of the breast. It is frequently seen after pregnancy and breast feeding or after significant weight loss. Goals of the operation are, therefore, to elevate the droopy breast mound and to tighten the skin envelope of the breast making the breast higher on the chest and more youthful in appearance.

Q. How is breast lift surgery done?

A. There are several methods for performing the operation which are determined based on one's physical findings, but in general, an excess of skin is removed and the breast gland is elevated and sewn in a higher position.  Often times, this procedure is done simultaneous with the insertion of a breast implant.

Q. What is the recovery period like?

A. People recover from this generally speaking within 2 weeks time, some may require an additional week to get back to full activity. There is, generally, little pain associated with the operation. Sutures are normally removed during the second postoperative week. There is commonly some incisional drainage for 2 or 3 days and therefore light dressings on the incisions are required during the early days after surgery.

Q. Who is an ideal candidate for breast lift surgery?

A. Ideal candidates are those who have lost breast volume from either weight loss or pregnancy or age and whose nipple has dropped below the fold of the breast along the chest wall.

Q. How long do the results last?

A. Although it varies from person to person, most breast lifts last approximately 10 years.

Q. What are some of the most common benefits of breast lift surgery?

A. Breast lift gives a person a more youthful, better shaped breast and therefore improves self esteem, and allows one to more easily fit into clothing.
