An Interview with Dr. Chuck Le on Dental Implants |
|
Dr. Chuck Le is a dentist and has answered some of the most common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Dental Implants.
Q. What are dental implants?
A. Dental implants are cylindrical, screw-shaped metallic devices, surgically positioned into the jawbone in the spaces left by extracted teeth. In essence, dental implants act as "artificial roots." After a short period of time during which the body adjusts to the implant, a crown or bridge, called an abutment, attaches to the implant. The results typically are so effective that it is impossible to tell the difference between dental implants and real teeth just by looking!
Q. What are the benefits of dental implants?
A. Dental implants are designed to provide a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel and function like natural teeth. While this is important to everyone, it is especially so for the person who has lost teeth. Patients are rediscovering the comfort and confidence to eat, speak, laugh and enjoy life.
Preventing bone loss is crucial to both appearance and to oral health, especially as a person ages, and implants help preserve facial structure and prevent the bone deterioration that occurs when teeth are missing and as the result of the aging process.
Q. How long does an implant last?
A. Implants can last a long time, especially if they have integrated well with bone. Most of the time, they outlast the patients. However, like natural teeth, they need to be cleaned and maintained every three to six months.
Q. What are implants made of?
A. Implants have been, made of commercially pure titanium, which is available in four grades. Most recently, implant manufacturers have begun using Grade 5 titanium, or Titanium 6AL-4V. The numbers signify 6% aluminum and 4% vanadium. Titanium is medically well known for its compatibility with the human body, and has been used in back surgeries for decades; and the other metals are strong and lightweight.
Q. Who is a candidate for implants?
A. Because implants are mostly made of titanium, we know they would work safely for most people, making many patients candidates. Probably the best thing for patients considering dental implants is for them to ask their dentists, see if they felt dental implants would be a good choice for them.
Q. How are dental implants placed?
A. Once the site has been prepared, the implant is placed gently into the bone of the jaw. Because bone tissue has little, often no nerves, the amount of pain is minimal. Some patients have compared the discomfort to that of having a cavity filled. At 7 Day Dental, we offer local and general anesthesia, as well.
After the implant placement, a period of three to six months passes while the bone of the jaw bonds with the titanium of the implant. Patients return at that time, and usually have their bridges or crowns installed.
Q. How to contact Dr. Chuck Le if we have further questions?
