Dr. Eric Desman is a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Here the Doctor has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Rhinoplasty.

Q.    What is rhinoplasty?

A.    Rhinoplasty is commonly known as a "nose job". It is a surgical procedure to reshape the nose. There are any number of different features that can be altered during a rhinoplasty procedure. A hump can be shaved down, the tip can be refined, the nasal bones can be narrowed, etc.

Q.    What are the risks associated with rhinoplasty?

A.    As with any surgery there are always risks involved.  Some of the risks from rhinoplasty include the following: Bleeding, infection, asymmetry, scarring, damage to deeper structures, numbness, chronic pain, nasal airway alterations, anesthesia, and unsatisfactory results.

Q.    Will I be put under general anesthesia?

A.    This depends upon the extent of your surgery.

Q.    Who is a good candidate for rhinoplasty?

A.    Anyone who is in good health and is concerned with a particular aspect of the appearance of his or her nose is a good candidate for rhinoplasty. Surgery cannot give a patient someone else’s (e.g. Jessica Alba) nose. I can only refine and reshape what you start with.

Q.    What does a rhinoplasty procedure involve?

A.    This really depends upon exactly what you want me to change about your nose.  In general, the procedure is done in an operating room.  The surgery can be done under local anesthesia if there is minimal work to be done or a general anesthesia if more extensive changes need to be made to the nose.  This is done as outpatient surgery and you will go home the same day.  Again, depending upon exactly what is done, you may have a nasal splint and/or nasal packing.  The surgery usually takes anywhere between two to three hours.  After the procedure, you will be in the recovery room for about an hour.

Q.    How long does it take to recover from rhinoplasty?

A.    There are essentially two phases of recovery to the surgery.  The first phase is the immediate postoperative time when bruising and swelling subsides.  This usually lasts between two and three weeks.  The second phase of recovery can take anywhere up to a year.  After the underlying structures of the nose are reshaped, the overlying tissues will scar in and the scar tissue will remodel over time.  It is the remodeling of the scar tissue and skin that can take up to a year to reach its permanent and final appearance.

Q.    How long can one expect the results to last?

A.    The results should be permanent.
