An Interview with Dr. Ashley S. Nguyen on Tooth Whitening

Dr. Ashley S. Nguyen is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Tooth Whitening.

Q. What is tooth whitening?

A. Tooth whitening removes extrinsic and intrinsic staining.  Today many tooth-whitening options are available.  Patients choices include in-office whitening, professional take-home whitening with custom tray, and over the counter whitening strips or solutions from the upper markets.

Q. Who may benefit from teeth whitening?

A.  Every one could benefit from bleaching,

Q. Who are not recommended to undergo teeth whitening?

A.  We do not recommend these procedures for pregnant women or women who are nursing.

Q. What does tooth whitening involve?

A. Tooth whitening treatments typically contain hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide.  Ultimately, they work in the same manner by diffusing through the enamel and breaking the bonds in the stain molecules.  Once these molecules are broken down, they become invisible to the eye.  The surfactants contained in the whitening agent also help to remove extrinsic stains.

Q. How long does this take?

A.  The speed of whitening is generally related to the concentration and duration of treatment.  The permeability of your tooth structure to oxygen also determines how quickly your teeth will respond to a whitening procedure.

Q. How much does tooth whitening cost?

A.  A professional whitening procedure could cost between $300- $500 at our office.

Q. What are the side effects?

A. The potential side affects are gingival irritation and tooth sensitivity.  If a patient experiences gingival irritation, burning or sloughing during whitening, he or she should discontinue whitening until the problem has been resolved.  Sensitivity during whitening is transient and can be reduced using a lower percentage of hydrogen carbamide peroxide.  We recommend products that contain potassium nitrate and fluoride be used together with whitening agents to reduce sensitivity.

Q. How to contact Dr. Nguyen if we have further questions?
