An Interview with Dr. Daniel Ronel on Mommy Makeover.

Dr. Daniel Ronel , a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Here the Doctor has answered some of the common questions bizymoms visitors have about Mommy Makeover.

Q.    What is a Mommy Makeover?

A.    Mommy Makeovers can involve any number of procedures, from simple lip augmentations to full body transformations.  The most common combination is a breast augmentation and a tummy tuck, but other procedures include buttock lifts, liposuction, and breast reduction.

Q.    Who is a good candidate for Mommy Makeover?

A.    Anyone who is healthy and has realistic expectations is a good candidate.

Q.    What are the important facts about the safety and risks of the Mommy Makeover?

A.    When performed in an accredited surgical facility with board certified doctors, the risks are low.   Combining surgeries raises the complication risk slightly.  We use preoperative acupuncture and other modalities to decrease pain, bleeding, and bruising.

Q.    What happens during the Mommy Makeover surgery?

A.    In the case of a breast augmentation and tummy tuck, first the breast incision is made, and the implant (if there is one) is placed.  The breast skin is lifted into the proper, youthful position and the incisions are closed. After both breasts are made, the tummy tuck is performed.  First the bikini line incision is made, then the muscles are sewn together to tighten the trunk, and then the skin is pulled down and smoothed out.  The excess skin is removed, drains are inserted, and the incision in sutured closed.  I also insert a ”pain buster”, which is a little balloon pump that drips in pain medicine right into the site of surgery.

Q.    What are the Options for the Mommy Makeover?

A.    There are many options for a mommy makeover.  While the most common is a breast augmentation and a tummy tuck, many women replace the tummy tuck with liposuction.  Another common combination is a thigh lift and a buttock lift.

Q.    What is the recovery time for Mommy Makeover?

A.    Most women go back to work in 2 weeks.  The first few days are difficult, although you can’t just lie in bed.  By the end of the first week, most people feel good enough to be taken out shopping or to a movie, etc.  Between the first and second week, most people are going a little stir crazy and even go into work for a few hours.  With the addition of acupuncture and reflexology, we’ve seen a decrease in the recovery time.

Q.    How much will the Mommy Makeover cost?

A.    The combination of breast augmentation and a tummy tuck costs between $12,000 –$ 18,000 depending on where the surgery is performed, whether saline or silicone implants are used, and whether or not the nipple needs to be lifted.  These prices include the OR and anesthesia fees, as well the treatments by our Integrative Medicine team.
