The state of Alaska was purchased from the Russian empire in 1867 for a cost of $7.2 million, which is about 2 cents for ever acre of land ($4.74 for every square kilometer). Alaska went through a number of changes in administration before it became an organized territory in 1912. It became the 49th state in January 1959. The name of the state has its origins from colonial Russia. It is also known as Alveska, which is an Aleut word, and translates to 'the great land'.

Alaska State Song
Alaskas Flag

Written by Marie Drake
Composed by Elinor Dusenbury

Eight stars of gold on a field of blue Alaskas flag. May it mean to you The blue of the sea, the evening sky

The mountain lakes, and the flowrs nearby; The gold of the early sourdoughs dreams, The precious gold of the hills and streams

The brilliant stars in the northern sky, The "Bear" - the "Dipper" - and, shining high, The great North Star with its steady light

Over land and sea a beacon bright. Alaskas flag - to Alaskans dear, The simple flag of a last frontier.
