A large number of commonly used acne facial products which are available for over the counter purchase, contain standard ingredients which tend to dry out the skin of the user. Some of these substances are:
Benzoyl peroxide
Salicylic acid
Retin A
These substances found in a vast number of acne related treatments and products, can hardly be substituted or eliminated from the list of ingredients because of their effective action in treating acne. Their contributory action in the process of eliminating acne is described below:
Benzoyl peroxide
The most widely used Benzoyl peroxide has been utilized for many years and is found in products such as ProActiv and Clearasil. Its popular use is owing to its proven track record in the reducing of acne and it is still usually the first treatment implemented in cases of acne which are not extreme. The bacteria that cause acne known as P.acnes or Propionibacteria acnes, cannot survive in the presence of large quantities of oxygen. The Benzoyl peroxide destroys the P.acnes by adding oxygen into the pores of the skin. Benzoyl peroxide is frequently used in long term treatments to prevent acne as well and are often continued even after the condition has been dealt with.
Salicylic acid is largely used in the composition of acne facial products which are applied on areas that are not inflamed. It is a beta hydroxyl acid and is popularly used in toners, cleansers, creams, lotions and even in medicated pads. Its action exfoliates and gets rid of dead skin cells from inside the follicle and keeps the area dirt and blockage free. An important contribution of Salicylic acid is its corrective action in the abnormal processes which take place to cause skin to become acne prone.
Retin A is obtained from vitamin A and works powerfully to treat comedonal acne by gels and cream which are available on prescription. Its action accelerates skin exfoliation, and reduces the clogging up of follicles with dead cells by increasing the rate of cell turn over.
All these three common ingredients however have a drying effect on the skin which cannot be avoided. Counter treatment could be recommended by your doctor or dermatologist, who will be able to advise you on which other acne facial products you should purchase to combat the dryness that will result from the presence of these substances in your acne treatments.
